Wedding is a ceremony that speaks about various rituals, traditions and ethnicity of a particular religion. In every religion, religion is a big ceremony which has got several parts and there are specific rituals and traditions for each one. Though people’s psychology has changed a lot over the ages, they are still very much serious about observing all rituals of wedding strictly. Jewish wedding is among the most colorful wedding ceremonies in the world. There are multiple phases in a traditional Jewish wedding and there are specific rituals that are followed very strictly. Truly, the rituals and traditions of Jewish wedding speak a lot about interesting religious beliefs of the Jews. It starts quite long before the wedding day and there are several things that both the bride and the groom have to follow. It is customary for both the parties to visit houses of their relatives, neighbors and friends of their parents before the wedding where they are blessed and greeted with gifts and dinner. In this journey the bride is accompanied by her female companions the groom with his friends. At their homes, feasts are arranged for the close relatives and attendants of the weeding but it is mandatory for both the bride and the groom to fast for the last 48 hours before the wedding. There are specific attires that they need to wear during this period. To symbolize the sorrow for going out of their families leaving their respective parents, the bride and the groom wear white attire during this phase. Holy bath at the sea on the wedding day is a Jewish wedding tradition for the bride. But as sea is not available every where, these days’ people use holy water. However, the tradition of the bride’s mother of blessing her daughter after the bath is still followed. The mother gives her blessing when the bride combs her hair after the holy bath. The main wedding ceremony is held under a beautifully decorated canopy, known as huppa. The bride and groom start it with signing the ketuba (marriage contract) in presence of their parents and relatives. In the next step the groom present the wedding ring to the bride and after putting it on her finger they are declared married. Some branches of Judaism have provision for the same for the brides too. After being declared married, the bride and the groom share wine from a single container and it ends with the bride and the groom joining people at the wedding reception where they are escorted by their relatives and companions. A grand feast is arranged in the honor of the parents of the bride and the groom where endless varieties of food from traditional cuisines are served. |
